Industry 4.0

Senior leadership of SMEs is slower with the adoption of Industry 4.0 because the initial high investments in terms of employment costs for IT and engineering, maintenance costs for IT infrastructure and access to talent pose a challenge. At the same time, MNCs are continuing with the roll-out of cyber-physical systems and – enabled by these technologies – are also experimenting with new business models. This poses a challenges, as SME’s form an integral part of the industrial value chain in the manufacturing sector: they need to start the implementation of cyber-physical systems in order to continue to form part of their supply chain (or migrate to another one).

Why? Because historical evidence shows that industrial revolutions never take place over night – but they do eventually change the structure of economies. The module will provide specific examples of how SME’s have successfully overcome this challenge.
