Juan Palacios earned his PhD from Stanford University, where he conducted his doctoral research under the guidance of William F. Sharpe, the 1990 Nobel Prize laureate for Economics. Prof. Palacios also holds an MBA from IESE and a degree in Industrial Engineering from the Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros Industriales in Barcelona.
Juan Palacios is a Former Collaborator in the Department of Financial Management at IESE, where he began his academic career in 1967. He has also been a professor at AESE Escola de Direcção e Negócios in Portugal and at the Instituto Internacional San Telmo in Seville, where he is a member of the Board of Trustees. He served on the academic board of MLP Corporate University in Heidelberg, Germany, from 2001 to 2008.
Previously, he was a visiting professor at Miami University?s Graduate School of Business. He also taught an executive education seminar at the Inter-American Development Bank in Washington, D.C. He was a co-founder and member of the council of the Brussels-based European Finance Association (EFA).
In his capacity as a consultant, Prof. Palacios helped launch and was on the faculty of the Centro de Estudios Monetarios y Financieros (CEMFI) in Madrid, and was a member of Stanford Business School?s Financial Services Research Initiative from 1993 to 1998. He spent twenty-three years of his career as a general manager at Banco Bilbao Vizcaya (BBV) in Madrid, and has served on the boards of directors of more than ten banks and financial institutions, including Banca Catalana. He was the chairman of Intermoney and the vice chairman and founder of the Spanish Derivatives Market (MEFF). He was the chairman of the Spanish Financial Analysts Society and the director of the Euro Banking Association in Paris. He is a member of the advisory board and the academic and scientific board of the Fundación de Estudios Financieros in Madrid.
Prof. Palacios serves on the editorial board of the journal Inversión and was an associate editor of the Journal of Banking and Finance. He is the author or co-author of numerous journal articles and book chapters. Recent examples include a chapter in (Achieving Perfection in Senior Management: A Tribute to Professor Antonio Valero) in 2006, and a chapter on finance and the European Union in La iniciativa y las personas en la empresa (Initiative and People Within the Company) in October 2004. In 2011, he published the book Finanzas personales (Personal Finance), which has been translated into Portuguese.
